My downloads are slow. What can I do?
Fast Usenet never limits your download speed, so you should be able to download as fast as your internet connection allows. If your downloads seem slow, these steps usually help:
- Use SSL on port 563 or 443. Some internet providers slow down Usenet traffic on the standard port 119. An encrypted connection prevents that.
- Use more connections. Most newsreaders download faster with more connections. Try 20 to 45 (the limit is 50).
- Use the server nearest to you: news.fastusenet.org in North America, or euro.fastusenet.org in Europe.
- Try a wired connection. Wi-Fi is often much slower than a cable connected to your router.
- Check your newsreader's speed limit. Many newsreaders have a setting that caps download speed. Please make sure it's turned off.
- Check your VPN. A VPN can reduce speed. Try a VPN server closer to you, or test without it.
You can measure your connection with our speed test. If your speed is still well below what your internet plan provides, please contact our support team with a traceroute to our server, and we'll take a look.
