NewsLeecher is a popular Usenet newsreader capable of downloading articles from newsgroups or via NZB files, and it automatically unpacks downloads when needed.
In this tutorial we walk through downloading, installing, and configuring NewsLeecher to work with our secure Usenet servers.
Visit the official NewsLeecher website (newsleecher.com) and download the newsreader installer. Once downloaded, launch the setup file.
Read through the license agreement. If you agree, select "I accept the agreement" to continue.
Choose where to install. The default is Program Files (x86)\Newsleecher. Select "Browse" to pick a different folder.
NewsLeecher creates a Start Menu entry. You can specify a title here.
Optionally create a Desktop icon. The default creates one, so untick "Create a Desktop Icon" if you prefer not to.
Review your setup information. If everything looks correct, click "Install" to begin.
Setup is complete. Keep "Run Application" checked to launch NewsLeecher after clicking "Finish", or uncheck it if you don't want it to start.
In the NewsLeecher manager on the left, click "Add Server" and enter your Fast Usenet details: server news.fastusenet.org, SSL enabled (port 563), and your username and password.
You'll now see "Subscribe" in the top-right menu. Click "Subscribe" to retrieve the newsgroup list.
If you haven't previously downloaded the newsgroup list, this message will appear.
Click "Get Group List" to download the latest version of the group list.
You'll see a large list of available newsgroups. Filter by keyword to find what you want. For example, filtering for "BMW" shows only matching groups. Right-click a group title and choose "Subscribe".
Go to the "Articles" tab. Your subscribed group appears under "Uncategorized". To grab the latest headers, right-click the group title and select "Update Groups", then choose how many articles to download.
To download NZB files, open the Queue tab and click "Import NZB" (or right-click → "Import NZB"). Locate the NZB file on your computer and open it, and it loads into NewsLeecher.
